Social
Work profession promotes social change, problem solving in human
relationship and the empowerment and liberation of people to enhance
well-being. Thus the college realized the need to begin a need
based programme and train rural youth at master’s level in social
work. The department was initiated on Aug, 2009 with 26 students
and 4 faculties.
At the
department the uniqueness that is observed is team work in
development of the profession and of the students, staff and the
client system. At the first year we utilize theories of human
behavior and social system, social work intervention, methods of
social work, History and Philosophy of Social work and at the
advanced level we train the students with advanced theories of human
development, abnormal psychology, project planning and management,
exposure to urban, rural and tribal community, Panchayath Raj
System, Administration and Human Resource Development. In other
words the first year MSW training focus on generalist role of social
work and the second year of training focus on optional/
specialization, either they can opt and get trained in Medical and
Psychiatric Social Work, Therapeutic Counseling, Community
Development, Human Resource Development and Industrial & Personnel
Management.
The
department gives prime importance to social work values, ethics,
knowledge, principles and attitudes. We at the department consider
each student as unique and provide student friendly, student
centered, student capacity based education which is progressively
recorded in their student hand book.
We are
constantly striving in skill enhancement and prepare the students as
per the organizational and corporate needs to strive for the human
development and are constantly engaged in varied activities which
are stated further in the report.
1. COURSE OBJECTIVES:

To promote social work
values, ethics, knowledge and attitudes

To understand the
needs and problems of vulnerable as well as the nature of
oppression and discrimination and the implications these have for
practice with client systems such as individuals, families,
groups, organizations, and communities.

Utilize a
biopsychosocial strengths-based perspective to guide assessment
and intervention efforts with clients.

To develop Critical
thinking and apply the theoretical and empirical knowledge and
skills of social work towards the client system.

To develop appropriate
oral and written communication skills with client systems

To utilize information
technology to enhance administrative effectiveness as social work
professionals.

Through use of
supervision, demonstrate self-awareness and professional use of
self to enhance professional social work practice with client
systems.

To assess practice
effectiveness through field action projects, evaluate research
findings, apply research knowledge, and conduct independent
research to enhance practice interventions.

To analyze the impact
of social policies and agency structures on clients, workers, and
the delivery of social work services and promote organizational
change.

To advocate through
professional and political means, for policies and programs that
address the social and economic well-being of clients and others
in need of assistance.
Course Pattern:
The course pattern is
designed by Mangalore University and carried out according to the
guidelines issued by Mangalore University. MSW course is of two
years duration and four semesters, two semesters during each year.
It comprises of 15 theory papers, field work practice and research
project.
